I used to have a great deal of respect for Meryl Streep but then she did that puff piece on Margaret Thatcher. Lately, Streep has been involving herself in the school reform movement at the behest of Viola Davis, who is from Central Falls, R. I. A lot of unsavory stuff has gone on there for the past twenty years. Davis got herself involved with Philip Anschutz’s Walden Media. She is the star of the Anschutz produced film, Won’t Back Down, which pushes “parent trigger” laws to justify right wing and neo-liberal union busting.

from the R I Future article:
“It should come as little surprise though that DAvis is shilling for the corporate education model … earlier this month even more famous Hollywood actor Meryl Streep, who beat out Davis for the Best Actress Academy Award, recent gave a grand total of $15,000 to the Segue charter school in the runner-ups hometown of Central Falls. According to the Projo, Davis “had introduced Streep to Segue and mentioned that the school was in dire need of a new building.” ”
from the piece by Diane Ravitch, linked to @ R I Future:
“The concert is sponsored by Walmart (the Walton family) and Walden Media. The Walton Family Foundation gave out $159 million last year for charters and vouchers.
Walden Media was one of the producers of “Waiting for ‘Superman.’” Billionaire Philip Anschutz, who owns Walden Media, funds rightwing groups, is anti-environment and bankrolled anti-gay referenda.”
Meryl Streep has lost her credibility as a spokesperson, in my humble opinion. I believe Anshutz is “Fracker in Chief”.
