Man Beat to Death by Fullerton Police Wasn’t Resisting, Says Witness

I initially learned of this from Cop Block.

It has reached a point in the US where we live in a virtual police state as bad as that of either the Nazi regime or the Soviet/East German regimes of post-WW II.

The actions of the police, the spying, the warrantless searches, the tanks, and battering ram raids, the arbitrary selection of people of minority groups for persecution make the police reminiscent of the Gestapo, NKVD and Stasi.

After years of being propagandized by Hollywood and Television we have come to accept the unacceptable, bear the unbearable.  We have voted to give up freedom for the dubious security of living in a police state.

America’s founding fathers would be ashamed of us.  Thomas Jefferson, Sam Adams, Tom Paine and Ben Franklin would be calling for a revolution to end this tyranny.

For truth be told the police are not your friend.  They are there to protect the property and lives of the rich, to arrest the poor and those who violate ridiculous laws governing pot.

Woe unto you if you are a member of a despised, or dispossessed minority as defined by race, class, sex, gender or sexuality.  If your hair is too long, or you have too many tats and rebel clothing.  If you have an attitude that assumes that since you are harming no one and are perhaps not even breaking any real laws, that you should have the freedom to dress as you wish, listen to the music you like and generally not conform to the twisted standards of the pig, who is all too often a Dominionist Christer.

They can murder and the powers that be will do nothing or at most administer a slap on the wrist as they did with the cold blooded murderer of Oscar Grant.

Will Apple Follow Microsoft in Pulling Out of Christian Values Network?

Hours after being named in a petition on Change.org, software giant Microsoft removed their online store from a referral service that funds alleged hate groups.

Started by Seattle resident Stuart Wilber, the petition claims that dozens of LGBT-friendly companies — including Apple, Dell, and Netflix — are unknowingly supporting alleged hate groups through the Christian Values Network (CVN), a link referral service that donates money to more than 170,000 charities.

WinRumors.com reports that “Customers can choose to purchase Apple hardware or a Netflix subscription through the service and Apple or Netflix would make a donation to the charity of the customer’s choice through CVN.”

Greed, Excess and America’s Gaping Class Divide

From Rolling Stone: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/blogs/taibblog/the-new-let-them-eat-cake-20110713

By Matt Taibbi
July 13, 2011

Courtesy of good friend and Supreme Court of Assholedom justice David Sirota comes this revolting list of Marie Antoinettoid moments from recent years, in an article called “The New ‘Let Them Eat Cake!'”

Some of the moments on the list are easily recalled – Berkshire Hathaway gazillionaire Charlie Munger’s famous “suck it up and cope” quote, coming from a guy whose company was heavily invested in bailed-out banks, was an obvious inclusion – but others are quite shocking.

For instance, I was completely floored by the New York Times‘ pseudo-ironic take on the government’s response to the financial crisis, a piece entitled “You Try to Live on $500K in This Town.”

This came at a time when President Obama was considering curtailing compensation for bailed-out bankers at $500,000. The piece was sort of meant to be taken half as a joke, but it is not hard to detect an element of demented earnestness in the fashion section article, an honest argument that with mortgages and private school tuition and co-op fees and taxes, it really was very hard for a certain kind of New Yorker to get by on half a million a year.

The proposed salary cap — remember, this cap was only going to be for banks that had fucked up badly enough to need a federal bailout — became the cassus belli for a propaganda war launched from the general direction of Wall Street, where the notion that the government should restrict the salaries of exactly the irresponsible greedheads who caused a global financial crisis was met with blunt outrage.

Sirota’s list highlights another bizarre aspect of the $500k story. During the debate over the proposed cap, one of the things we started to hear from the Antoinette class was a general sense of wonder at the notion that anyone considered them rich. It turns out that a great many of the people who make big six-figure incomes consider themselves middle class. A University of Chicago professor arguing against the repeal of the Bush tax cuts made waves by saying he was “just getting by” with his $250,000 income, while ABC’s Charlie Gibson and CNN reporter Kiran Chetry in recent years suggested that $200-$250,000 is middle class (Chetry’s exact quote was that “in some parts of the country,” $250K “is middle class”).

Born to Breed: An Interview With Quiverfull Walkaway Vyckie Garrison

From Politicus USA: http://www.politicususa.com/en/born-breed-quiverfull-walkaway

Born to Breed: The Quiverfull Movement and its impact on patriarchal policies and right wing politics; an interview I conducted with Vyckie Garrison, a courageous woman who left the biblical patriarchal Quiverfull movement.

Sarah Jones: Can you define “Quiverfull movement” and what you’ve identified as the patriarchal beliefs behind it?

Vyckie Garrison:
I like to define Quiverfull as a very powerful head trip. It’s an all-encompassing vision of a big, happy family which infects the mind and affects every aspect of a Believer’s life. The term “Quiverfull” comes from a reference in Psalm 127 which likens children to “arrows” in the hands of a mighty man, “blessed is the man who has his quiver full of them.”

Quiverfull Believers eschew all forms of birth control in favor of “trusting the Lord” with their family planning. The Quiverfull ideal embraces a “biblical” model (read, fundamentalist) of the traditional family which insists that the husband is the head of the household and the wife is the submissive “helpmeet.”

Sarah Jones: How do those beliefs manifest for wives and female children? Can you give us some examples of expectations of wives and daughters that might surprise our readers?

Vyckie Garrison:
In practice, the Quiverfull ideals often result in larger-than-average families (think, Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar of TLCs “19 & Counting” fame) in which the woman stays at home having babies, homeschooling, homesteading, dressing “modestly,” and most importantly, serving and submitting to her “lord,” i.e., her patriarchal husband.

The Quiverfull lifestyle is extremely demanding and the only way a woman can hope to succeed is to rely heavily on her older daughters. It is expected that a Quiverfull daughter will be fully capable of running the household, including all meal-preparation, laundry duties, child care and homeschooling of younger siblings by the age of twelve. Many girls are doing all this by the time they’re eight or ten because their mothers are so consumed with birthing more and more “arrows” to fill the quivers of their husbands.

Experts demystify link between extreme weather and climate change

From Trust.org:  http://www.trust.org/alertnet/news/experts-demystify-link-between-extreme-weather-and-climate-change

LONDON (AlertNet) – Scientists tackled the highly debated, and somewhat perplexing, relationship between climate change and weather disasters at the recent launch of a U.S. magazine series on the subject, concluding that an indisputable connection exists between the two.

“The link between climate change and extreme weather is not so much theoretical as observational,” Fred Guterl, executive editor of monthly magazine Scientific American, told reporters on a conference call late last month. “It’s possible to look at this and really begin to see, in a way that you can measure, that this is not really just business as usual in terms of weather. There really is a climate signal.”

The three-part series in Scientific American by science journalist John Carey was funded by the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, which is based in Arlington, Virginia.

In conjunction, Pew Center experts Jay Gulledge and Dan Huber have released a report that attempts to demystify the impacts of climate change on global weather conditions, and were also on hand to discuss their findings.

Gulledge explained to journalists that much of the confusion surrounding global warming and extreme weather events – including floods, droughts and heat waves – stems from the public’s desire for definitive cause-and-effect answers and scientists’ unwillingness to provide them.

Atheists file lawsuit against Gov. Rick Perry over Christian prayer summit

From Raw Story: http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/07/13/atheists-file-lawsuit-against-gov-rick-perry-over-prayer-summit/

The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday to prevent Texas Republican Governor Rick Perry from taking part in a planned evangelical Christian prayer rally he initiated in Houston.

Perry proclaimed August 6 as a “Day of Prayer and Fasting for our Nation to seek God’s guidance” and invited governors from across the nation to join his Christian prayer summit at Reliant Stadium.

“Given the trials that beset our nation and world, from the global economic downturn to natural disasters, the lingering danger of terrorism and continued debasement of our culture, I believe it is time to convene the leaders from each of our United States in a day of prayer and fasting, like that described in the book of Joel,” Perry said in June.

The legal complaint asks the federal court to declare unconstitutional Perry’s organization, promotion and participation in the event because it violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

It says Perry’s active participation in the event violates the U.S. Constitution by “giving the appearance that the government prefers evangelical Christian religious beliefs over other religious beliefs and non-beliefs, including by aligning and partnering with the American Family Association, a virulent, discriminatory and evangelical Christian organization known for its intolerance.”

Calif. gov signs landmark law to teach gay history

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill making California the first state in the nation to add lessons about gays and lesbians to social studies classes in public schools.

Brown, a Democrat, signed the landmark bill requiring public schools to include the contributions of people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender in social studies curriculum. The Democratic-majority Legislature had passed the bill last week on a largely party-line vote.

“History should be honest,” the governor said in a statement Thursday. “This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books.”

Brown signed the bill Wednesday, but announced on Thursday that he had done so.

The bill has drawn criticism from some churches and conservative groups that argue such instruction would expose students to a subject that some parents find objectionable.
