REPORT: Media Ignore Rep. Issa’s Alleged Criminal Past

From Media Matters for America:

January 11, 2011

Rep. Darrell Issa’s past includes arrests for weapons charges and auto theft, suspicions of arson, and accusations of intimidation with a gun, but you’d hardly know it from the media’s recent coverage of the new chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. While Issa was substantially mentioned in 15 articles in the nation’s largest newspapers since the last election — including several major profiles — only one of those articles mentioned any of these allegations. Likewise, interviewers did not ask Issa about his alleged criminal past in any of the cable or network interviews he sat for during that period.

Network and Cable Interviewers Won’t Ask Issa About Criminal Allegations

In 11 Interviews Since Election Day, No Network Or Cable Anchor Has Asked Issa About The Allegations Against Him. Media Matters reviewed the Nexis database for cable and network interviews of Issa from November 3, 2010 through January 10, 2011. In 11 interviews on ABC, CBS, MSNBC, Fox Broadcasting Co., Fox News, and CNN, no host or anchor asked Issa about the criminal allegations that have been made against him.

Print Media Largely Overlooks Issa’s Alleged Criminal Past

Only One Of 15 Articles Substantially Mentioning Issa Referenced Any Of The Allegations. Media Matters examined coverage of Issa in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Times from November 3, 2010, through January 10, 2011. Of the 15 articles in that period that included substantial coverage of Issa, only one referenced any of the allegations against him.

WikiLeaks chief: Charge Palin, Huckabee with ‘incitements to kill’

From Raw Story:

By Sahil Kapur
Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

The editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks called on US authorities to seek charges against high-profile Republicans Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee for “incitements to kill” by the use of “violent rhetoric” against the anti- secrecy outlet.

Julian Assange’s plea came in a press release Monday night in the aftermath of the Tucson murders Saturday that left 6 dead and 14 others wounded, the victims of which included Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) and federal judge John Roll.

“No organisation anywhere in the world is a more devoted advocate of free speech than WikiLeaks but when senior politicians and attention seeking media commentators call for specific individuals or groups of people to be killed they should be charged with incitement — to murder,” Assange said, mentioning comments made by, among others, Palin and Huckabee, two likely contenders for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.

In recent months, as WikiLeaks has engaged in the unauthorized leaks of embarrassing state secrets about the US and other countries, Huckabee has called for the “execution” of Assange, while Palin has urged authorities to pursue him “with the same urgency we pursue al Qaeda and Taliban leaders.”

Autunm Sandeen’s Shark Jumping Act

Jumping the Shark:

Jumping the shark is an idiom used to denote the point in a television program‘s history where the plot spins off into absurd storylines or unlikely characterizations. These changes were often the result of efforts to revive interest in a show whose audience had begun to decline.

The phrase jump the shark comes from the climactic scene in “Hollywood,” the third part (written by Fred Fox, Jr.[4]) of a three-part episode opening the fifth season of the American TV series Happy Days in September 1977. In this story, the central characters visit Los Angeles, where a water-skiing Fonzie (Henry Winkler), wearing swimming trunks and his leather jacket, jumps over a confined shark, answering a challenge to demonstrate his bravery. The series continued for nearly seven years after that, with a number of changes in cast and situations.

Jon Hein explained the concept as follows: “It’s a moment. A defining moment when you know that your favorite television program has reached its peak. That instant that you know from now on…it’s all downhill. Some call it the climax. We call it ‘Jumping the Shark.’ From that moment on, the program will simply never be the same.

I’m breaking a rule I set for myself and I am directly addressing some harsh criticism toward some one I had great respect for and who I considered and still consider a friend.

Hopefully people will understand that what I am saying is being said in the spirit of my wanting to stop a public trashing of another friend, Ashley Love.

Further I consider neither party blameless in this public act of getting down in what resembles a bar brawl.

But I find Autumn’s public trashing of Ashley Love to be cyber-bullying of the worst sort.  Autumn Sandeen has a very large platform, Pam’s House Blend which she has abused to publicly beat up on Ashley.

This has resulted in the oh so predictable formation of factions, a dividing along transsexual vs transgender.

Transgender Inc based on the ideology of Virginia Prince and organizations such as IFGE has never respected post-SRS women with a transsexual history.  To respect us would require their abandonment of all the Virginia Prince bullshit about post-transsexual women.

It would also requiring them to stop demanding we give in to every single crank who comes along claiming a place under the imaginary umbrella.

Today, I fielded a couple of comments that just left me shaking my head and thinking WTF.  I’m not a counselor, I write a largely left of center blog that includes items of interest to people in the LGBT/TQ communities as well.

But it seems that some people think that unless a person is absolutely politically correct and in 100% accord with GLAAD standards which were dictated by Transgender Inc, then that person merits some sort of hysterical attack.

Is Ashley right in using some of the language she has used?  Obviously not.  Some of her comments regarding others have been ill-considered and perhaps a little mean.

But I tried to watch Calpernia’s show on Logo and yes it was embarrassing and degrading of the lives many of us who are not over the top in the way Calpernia is.

The problem is people see Calpernia or Amanda Lapore and form a stereotypical idea of what post-transsexual women are like because so many of us are invisible, just working our jobs, forming our relationships and living our lives.

It is as if Lady Gaga or Madonna were the only representatives of women and the basis of a stereotype for all women.

While I like Kate Bornstein, my encounters with her at the Forward Motion Conference were delightful and included a terrific exchange of ideas I nonetheless find her public performances, as well as many of her pronouncements to be full of shit.  The sort of thing that cause me to hope no one thinks she speaks for me.

Would I have attacked either Calpernia or Kate in the manner Ashley did? Nah.. Why would I, I’ve been around for over 40 years and have seen post-SRS women who did far more embarrassing shit and besides we are individuals who got SRS, we are not a tightly regimented cult.

We each have our own opinions and the right to sometimes make fools of ourselves with out someone in a major blog devoting four long pieces to trashing us.

The problem is Transgender Inc requires absolute ideological purity.  It is so inflexible as to refuse to use Transsexual and Transgender instead of just Transgender.

I had some one tell me recently that “transsexualism supports the medicalization of the condition”.  I didn’t know what to say because to me, my having been transsexual was all about entering into a medical process that changed my body with hormones and sex reassignment surgery.

Transgender Inc also condemns people with transsexualism for getting their SRS and moving on.

I support a trans-inclusive ENDA not because I identify as transgender but because it seems like the right thing to do.  Yet in the nuts and bolts area, the clauses that get written in I would include things like consistency of presentation. Again I set off the howls of the bi-gendered CDs who claim they are as much women as I am even though they flip flop from male presentation to female and back.

Heaven forbid any transsexual ask WTF?

Autumn has built up a national platform, she has gained much earned respect for her actions this last summer regarding the repeal of DADT.  Her reputation and writing have a far larger volume than does anything Ashley Love has.

This is why it ill behooves her to use that platform to bully, defame and abuse Ms. Love.

There is another aspect to this which I find highly disturbing.

And that is privilege, which comes in all sorts of forms.

I have been on line for over 15 years now and have discovered that those of us who came-out and transitioned young are in a distinct minority, that we are all too often shouted down by those who have come out in middle age and who often use rank earned before they came out as a cudgel of credibility while showing a lack of awareness of the role sexism and classism plays in denying those who come out young an equal rank.

The other thing that bothers me immensely is not only is Ashley young and getting hammered by some one who is both older and possessing of a bigger platform from which to do this bullying, but Ashley is a woman of color.

During an adult lifetime of knowing transsexual and transgender people I have seen transsexual and transgender women  of color in about the same ratio to their cultures percentage in society, yet when it comes to leaders in Transgender Inc people of color are rare.

It seems like all too often the role of transsexual and transgender women of color, especially young sisters is that of martyr, to have one’s name read on the Day of Remembrance.

I apologize if I have rambled a bit in this post.  I hate it when friends fight.  I hate it when one throws away hard earned respect to engage in a public brawl. Most of all I hate bullying.  Abusing someone because you don’t like how they said something in a huge public forum is taking what should have been a private matter and turning it into a lynch mob sort of action.

‘Gay demon’ exorcist claims mass animal deaths due to ‘don’t ask’ repeal

The wacky superstitious Christians are at it again…

From Raw Story:

By Eric W. Dolan
Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

The deaths of thousands of blackbirds in Arkansas may have been caused by the recent repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” according to a self-described “prophet” who once claimed the ability to banish “gay demons.”

Evangelist Cindy Jacobs said on a video posted over the weekend that the strange phenomenon, that has now occurred in various places across the world, was an “answer” from God for violating his principles concerning homosexuality.

“According to biblical principles, marriage is between a man and a woman, so we have to say ‘what happens when a nation makes a decision that’s against God’s principles?'” she said. “Well, often what happens is that nature itself will begin to talk to us – for instance, violent storms, flooding.”

Jacobs founded Generals International (GI), an international evangelical Christian group, along with her husband in 1985. She is also a member of the Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders, a group of prophets who claim to have foreseen Islamic terrorism in 1999.

During an evangelical conference in 2008, Jacobs conducted a mass exorcism of the audience to cast out the spirits of pornography, addiction, lust, bisexuality, homosexuality, and perversion. In another event in Texas in November, she claimed that if Latinos voted for candidates who opposed gay marriage, then God would reward them with immigration reform.

National Center for Transgender Equality’s Syllogistic Nonsense

Today one of my news feeds (Transgender News) sent me a link to  The National Center For Transgender Equality Veterans and Military Issues”.

Syllogism is a logic form that takes two premises and forms a conclusion regarding the truth of a third statement’s truth based on those two premises.

While the following is false syllogism it is similar in form leaving one of the two initial premises unstated:

“Thirteen percent of all adults in the United States are veterans of the armed services. It is probable then that approximately thirteen percent of transgender people are veterans as well. Like all veterans, transgender people who have served in the military deserve the same respect and services earned by other veterans.”

The unstated premise involves thinking transgender or transsexual people might want to join an institution that goes abroad and murders countless people in order to further the imperialistic ends  of the Corporate Fascist interests we further by fighting these endless wars.

It presumes transsexual and transgender people are as eager to go murder people of color in order to rob their nations of their natural resources and push their people into virtual slavery where we exploit their labor for pennies per hour as straight cis-sex/gender people are.

Part of this logic fallacy is due to Transgender Inc. being dominated by people who grew out of the straight male transvestite/CD culture that often engages in serious denial and hiding by posturing behind the sort of macho mask that causes them to enter the service thinking perhaps doing so will cure them of their gender identity conflict.

Transsexual to female people who come out young aren’t very much inclined to adopt this survival strategy of trying to mask behind some sort of macho facade.  For one thing we tend to be too obviously physically feminine to hide it.  On top of that we tend to have other priorities.

While I was always a left wing hippie and not much concerned with the world of fashion and all even being into that is better than joining the military to go murder and oppress people of color in distant lands.

The repeal of DADT was passed.  I’m glad for you.  Don’t join the military.  Don’t murder and torture people to further the interests of the rich elite.  Read General Smedley Butler’s “War is a Racket”

Canadian Study Sees Global Warming for Centuries

From Common Dreams:

by Jeffrey Jones

January 9, 2011

CALGARY, Alberta – Carbon dioxide already emitted into the atmosphere will keep contributing to global warming for centuries, eventually causing a huge Antarctic ice sheet to collapse and lift sea levels, Canadian scientists said on Sunday.

“I think you do see a big divergence in potential futures depending on if there are some reductions in emissions,”said Shawn Marshall, a University of Calgary geography professor and one of the study’s authors. (AP Photo/Subhankar Banerjee, File)

Even the complete abandonment of fossil fuels and halt to emissions cannot prevent devastating ocean warming in Antarctica as well as increasing desertification in North Africa, the research finds.

Even so, many of the negative consequences in the Northern Hemisphere, such as loss of Arctic sea ice, are reversible. That means global efforts to cut greenhouse gases are not a waste of effort and money, said Shawn Marshall, a University of Calgary geography professor and one of the study’s authors.

“But there are some parts of the climate that have a lot of inertia and it will take many centuries before they start to reverse,” said Marshall.

The study, led by Nathan Gillett of the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis, is published in the journal Nature Geoscience.
