Colorado Sex-Change Doctor Considering Move

TRINIDAD, Colo. (AP) ¯ A town nicknamed the “sex change capital of the world” could be losing a doctor who has performed hundreds of the operations.

Dr. Marci Bowers said Monday she is “98 percent sure” she will be moving to the San Francisco area Oct. 1.

“There are advantages to being in a bigger city with access to airports,” said Bowers, adding that Trinidad’s location about a three-hour drive south of Denver was a barrier for some potential patients.

She also is in a relationship with a first-year surgical resident in San Francisco. Bowers said that if she moves, she would join an office in San Mateo with two plastic surgeons and a surgery center.

She said she is disappointed in some leaders of Mt. San Rafael Hospital where she operates, though she didn’t rule out a return to Trinidad one day.

Trinidad gained the nickname of “sex change capital of the world” from the work of Stanley Biber, who performed thousands of transsexual operations in town, among other medical work, starting in 1969. He stopped doing surgeries in 2003 and died in 2006.

In Bowers’ seven years in Trinidad, she has performed hundreds of gender reassignment surgeries. More recently, she also has been performing reconstructive surgery on victims of female genital mutilation.

  1. Justine Valinotti Says:

In a way, I can’t blame her for moving there. There will be greater resources available to her in the SF Bay area than there are in Trinidad. And, there are conservative members of the hospital board in Trinidad who keep on jacking up her fees and otherwise give her hassles.

But, as someone who was one of Marci’s SRS patients in Trinidad, I must say there was something special about going to Trinidad. Many of us who’ve had the surgery there refer to it as “The Trinidad Experience.”

Whether she goes to California or stays in Colorado, her patients will have a surgeon with not only great technical skills, but a great store of compassion.
