In The Name of God, Motherhood and the Führer

These pseudo-Christian Bigots are just bursting out in puss filled pustules of hatred and bigotry. They are beside themselves in all their un-American glory at not being able to deny their fellow citizens their equal rights and dignity.

Antigay Group in Tizzy Over Two Grooms

From The Advocate:

By Diane Anderson-Minshall
February 01, 2012

Macy’s, the retailer who has been among the staunchest LGBT corporate supporters, is under attack again, this time by One Million Moms, a small antigay group billed as “a project of the with the American Family Association.” The problem? Two tiny grooms, barely visible, atop a wedding cake in an advertisement that was sent to homes last week. The ad, an enticement to join Macy’s gift registry, features a car with a trunk full of wedding and honeymoon paraphernalia, from that festooned wedding cake to vintage luggage.

It was apparently enough to rile the Moms, who wrote on their website, that instead of making sales, Macy’s had “offended many customers in the process. The back cover looks like just a regular advertisement for their wedding registry service, but there is one major difference. When you take a closer look you see the cake topper of two men instead of the traditional man and woman. The ad also includes a license plate that reads ‘I do’ and hearts scattered everywhere. Macy’s must believe this is mainstream, but just because gay marriage is legal in a few states, this is inappropriate marketing and conservative customers will not support it.”

Hate Group Pressuring J.C. Penney to Drop Ellen DeGeneres

By: Michael Matson

American retail chain J.C. Penney announced last week that it will forge a new partnership with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. Company president Michael Francis said, “We couldn’t think of a better partner to help us put the fun back into the retail experience.”

But One Million Moms, a project of the anti-gay American Family Association (designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center), is pressuring J.C. Penney to drop DeGeneres because the People’s Choice Award winner for Favorite Daytime TV Host “offends traditional families” and claims that the majority of the company’s customers “will no longer shop there.”

Minister Calls Pro-Equality Starbucks “Hater of God”

From The Advocate:

By Trudy Ring
February 02, 2012

Claiming that Starbucks’ support of marriage equality means it “hates God,” ultraconservative minister Steven Andrew is calling on Christians to get their caffeine buzz elsewhere.

The Seattle-based coffee purveyor is among more than 100 companies that have pledged support for marriage equality in Washington State. The state Senate Wednesday approved a bill that would grant marriage rights to same-sex couples, and the House of Representatives is expected to follow suit soon.

In an online post published this week, Andrew, president of a California-based group called USA Christian Ministries, says all Christians and their churches should boycott Starbucks. “Christians are upset with Starbucks for turning against God, but we are glad to know that Starbucks doesn’t pretend to be for Christians,” he says in the post. He cites Bible verses that call homosexuality “an abomination” and those who oppose biblical tenets “haters of God.”

Breasts Yes, Vaginas No? How to Fight Back Against Komen “Race for the Cure” Foundation’s Bizarre Capitulation to Right-Wingers

From Alternet:

How the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation put their corporation-friendly image before women’s actual health concerns.

By Amanda Marcotte
February 1, 2012

It’s probably the fastest-spreading story in Internet history about the relationship between two non-profits. Late Tuesday afternoon, Planned Parenthood and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure announced that Komen would be withdrawing grants given to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings. Despite Komen’s lame attempts to claim otherwise, it was widely understood that this was about Komen aligning itself with the anti-choice movement, despite the anti-choice movement’s long history of opposing not just safe and legal abortion, but also access to contraception and even the prevention of cervical cancer through the use of the HPV vaccine.

So what gives? Why would Komen, which purports to be a women’s health organization, choose to align itself with an anti-health, anti-science movement instead of with another prominent women’s health organization that actually helps prevent and detect cancer? What role does Komen’s hearty corporate fundraising efforts play in all of this? Is there anything that people who care about women’s health concerns can do?

In the past couple of decades, one of the biggest accomplishments in women’s healthcare advocacy is destigmatizing breast cancer, and Komen certainly played a major role in this. In the past, women didn’t talk much about breast cancer, because like all things related to women’s sexuality, breasts were considered naughty and unspeakable and therefore so was breast cancer. Through cutesy methods, such as draping everything imaginable in pink ribbons, advocates were able to get breast cancer out of the closet and into the public discourse.

Unfortunately, in doing so, they weren’t quite able to lift the taboo on all of women’s healthcare. In place of the old taboo against all of women’s reproductive healthcare, there was now an above-the-belt/below-the-belt divide. When it comes to healthcare that allows women to keep their breasts, everyone from baseball players to every corporation looking to shore up its image was happy to talk about it. But anything below the belt, especially with regard to women managing their actual sex lives, remained taboo. STDs, pregnancy prevention, cervical cancer, abortion? All still considered dirty, and all still available for conservatives to demagogue about sin and sexuality. We are a country where everyone was clawing all over each other to talk about how important it is for women to get their boobs squeezed in a vise to look for cancer, but we’re also a country where a vaccine that’s been proven to prevent cancer below the belt is excoriated by prominent Republican politicians who want you to believe it gives “license” to female sexuality.

Mitt Speaks. Oh, No!

From The New York Times:

Published: February 1, 2012

On the morning after the Florida primary, Mitt Romney bounded out of bed, inhaled the sweet air of victory, donned his new cloak of invulnerability …

… and went on CNN to announce that he doesn’t care about poor people.

“I’m not concerned about the very poor,” he told a slightly stunned-looking Soledad O’Brien.

Whenever the topic turns to wealth, or the lack thereof, some inner demon seems to make Romney say something that sounds ridiculous, offensive or ridiculously offensive.

If this had been post-South Carolina, we might have assumed that he was making a play for the segment of his party that believes the greatest threat to the American way of life is greedy paupers. But the nomination was in the bag! Mitt was just being Mitt and trying to present himself as the candidate of the middle class, which he defined as “the 90-95 percent of Americans who, right now, are struggling.” Subtract the 1 percent at the top and Romney appeared to be saying that he was absolutely not going to direct his campaign at the bottom 4 percent of the American public. That certainly makes sense politically, since you are talking — according to my very rough calculations — mostly about folks who are living in households with incomes under $5,000. Not a group with terrific turnout.

Let’s deconstruct his entire remarks:

I’m in this race because I care about … (tiniest of pauses)… Americans. I’m not concerned about the very poor. …

Farewell to Our Feminist-in-Chief

From In These Times:

America’s top diplomat and former First Lady rewrote the rules on what women can be in America.

BY Sady Doyle
February 2, 2012

The woman on the platform seems happy. She’s an ordinary woman, well-dressed but not ostentatiously so, pretty but not playing it up, heading gracefully into late middle age. Her voice is low and calm; her tone is gracious. She smiles frequently as she speaks, compliments the reporters surrounding her and tells them how good it’s been to work with them, with what reads as genuine affection.

“I think after twenty years–and it will be twenty years–of being on the high wire of American politics, and all of the challenges that come with that,” she says, “It would probably be a good idea to just find out how tired I am.”

That gets a laugh, and she laughs with it. If you take Hillary Clinton moment by moment–if you take her, for example, at this moment on January 26, as she announces that she step down from her position as the Secretary of State when the president’s terms ends–it’s hard to imagine that she’s spent the last two decades of her life as one of the most hated women in America. And if you take her on the whole, the void left by her promised departure from American politics is nearly impossible to comprehend.

“Women look for themselves in any woman who stands out among a sea of men,” says blogger Melissa McEwan, of Shakesville. “Women who find themselves in Hillary Clinton have a passionate attachment to her, because they see reflected back at them qualities they have or hope to acquire–strength, independence, fortitude, a commitment to other women–but also because to see a woman with those qualities in her position is some sign, even despite her Shawshankian swim through a river of shit to get there, that this nation will embrace a woman like that, like them.”

For decades, Hillary Clinton has served as a litmus test for just how much the American public will accept from a smart, ambitious, assertive, feminist woman: How much she can reasonably hope to attain, and what opposition she will face. Her basic competence has never truly been in question; her “likability,” the ability of society to accept her, always has been. And women have projected their deepest hopes and fears onto her throughout.

Ultra Right Wing Exteremist Denny Rehberg, GOP Congressman And Senate Hopeful, Blasts Child Labor Regulations

From Huffington Post:

02/ 2/2012

WASHINGTON — In a speech expounding on the rift between rural America and Washington D.C., Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.) vowed Thursday to use his funding powers to stop the Obama administration from implementing new child-labor rules pertaining to agricultural work, accusing the “urban” Labor Department of meddling in a “rural” industry it doesn’t understand.

“This is one of those situations where I think the Department of Labor is overstepping its boundaries, its knowledge base, and frankly I think you’re sitting around watching reruns of “Blazing Saddles” and that’s your interpretation of what goes on in the West,” Rehberg, who holds the Labor Department’s purse strings for the House of Representatives, said as he lectured a labor official during a hearing Thursday. “And it’s not anymore.”

Last year, the Labor Department proposed new rules governing what kinds of potentially dangerous tasks minors can and cannot perform on farms and in grain facilities. Although child and worker advocates said the new rules were long overdue, the proposals created an uproar among farmers and agricultural trade groups, who argued that the rules could hurt family-farming traditions.

Although the original proposals largely exempted family farms, the Labor Department bowed yesterday to the farming industry, further widening the exemptions it had already put forward. But that didn’t stop Rehberg and GOP members of the House agriculture subcommittee from piling on the department Thursday, using the hearing as an opportunity to put forth their rural bona fides.

Komen for the Cure’s new fashion statement: the pink burqa

Jacquielynn Floyd is my favorite Dallas Morning News Columnist.

From The Dallas Morning News:

Published: 01 February 2012

You would have thought an outfit as big, as influential, as respected-bordering-on-sanctified as Dallas-based Susan G. Komen for the Cure would be beyond the reach of one-issue hardball politics.

You’d have thought it, and you would have been wrong.

The nation’s largest breast-cancer charity voluntarily donned the theocratic burqa of anti-abortion ideology Tuesday with its decision to defund Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest provider of reproductive health services.

Their message: We care about women’s health, but only until the organized arm-twisting gets too intense.

Well, the Komen people aren’t the first to scatter like a flock of frightened turkeys in the scary current atmosphere of abortion politics.

Washington Gay Marriage: State Senate Approves Bill To Allow Same Sex Couples To Wed

From Huffington Post:

02/ 1/12

OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Washington state Senate on Wednesday passed a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage, setting the stage for the state to become the seventh to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed.

The measure now heads to the House, which is expected to approve it. Gov. Chris Gregoire supports the measure and has said she will sign it into law, though opponents have promised to challenge it at the ballot with a referendum.

The packed public galleries burst into applause as the Senate passed the measure on a 28-21 vote Wednesday night after nearly an hour and a half of debate. Four Republicans crossed party lines and voted with majority Democrats for the measure. Three Democrats voted against it.

Democratic Sen. Ed Murray, the bill’s sponsor, said he knew same-sex marriage “is as contentious any issue that this body has considered in its history.”

Regime Change In Oakland

From Occupy Wall Street:

Jan. 31, 2012,

On Saturday, January 28, thousands of parents, families and engaged citizens gathered together to open a community center in the heart of downtown Oakland. The Police, under orders from Mayor Quan, responded to this peaceful demonstration of direct democracy and community building by arresting around 400 people. Hundreds more were injured when an army of officers marched on these unarmed families, raised their guns and fired bullets, tear gas canisters, smoke bombs, concussion grenades and other explosive devices into the crowd. Mayor Quan, on the same day as solidarity marches were organized by dozens of occupations across the nation, has called on the Occupy Movement to denounce Oakland’s show of bravery under fire and community strength. We stand with Oakland and call for the immediate resignation of Quan, who on Saturday made it clear that the state has abandoned democracy and joined the 1% in declaring war against the people.

Extreme economic injustice and true democracy can never co-exist. We have seen this violent truth before: in Pinochet’s Chile, 1990’s Russia, Suharto’s Indonesia. Four months ago, the Occupy Movement showed that this historical truth has finally come home: The economic oppression by the 1% has become so egregious that it cannot exist without destroying the spirit of the American democratic system. Across the country, people are rising up to demand a more just nation, and police brutality and state violence are the only things keeping this injustice in place. In Oakland, thousands of active community members chose to engage in true democracy by supporting the real and pressing needs of the people. The state, which supposedly represents these people, exercised extreme police brutality and violence to protect the 1%’s vacant assets. The explicit goal of the action was to build community—to open a desperately needed community center with a library, medical care, free education and emergency housing in a city that has suffered massive budget cuts, high unemployment rates and ravaged public schools. In response, the city government poured hundreds of thousands of dollars, bullets and canisters of tear gas into declaring open war on these parents, students, workers, artists, teachers, children and veterans. These people’s only offense was to believe so deeply in the American tradition of democracy, self-sufficiency, and sacrifice for the next generation that they were willing to put their bodies on the line to make this nation the empowering democracy that we know it can be.

‘Gasland’ Journalists Arrested At Hearing By Order Of House Republicans

From Huffington Post:

Posted: 02/ 1/2012

WASHINGTON — In a stunning break with First Amendment policy on Capitol Hill, House Republicans directed Capitol Hill police to detain a highly regarded documentary crew that was attempting to film a Wednesday hearing on a controversial natural gas procurement practice. Republicans also denied the entrance of a credentialed ABC News news team that was attempting to film the event.

Josh Fox, director of the Academy Award-nominated documentary “Gasland” was taken into custody by Capitol Hill police this morning, along with his crew, after Republicans objected to their presence, according to Democratic sources present at the hearing. The meeting of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment had been taking place in room 2318 of the Rayburn building. Rep. Brad Miller (D-N.C.), the ranking Democrat on the committee, is currently seeking to secure a procedural maneuver that would allow the detained film crew to re-enter the hearing, which is open to the public. Miller’s motion is not expected to succeed.

Approximately 16 officers entered the hearing room and handcuffed Fox amid audible discussions of “disorderly conduct” charges, according to Democratic sources present at the arrest.

Hinesburg farmers join lawsuit challenging Monsanto

From Vermont:  Burlington Free Press:|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE

Written by Sally Pollak
Jan. 31, 2012

Rachel Nevitt is an organic farmer in Hinesburg whose work brought her Tuesday from Full Moon Farm to new turf: the Thurgood Marshall U.S. Courthouse in New York City.Nevitt and her husband, David Zuckerman, are plaintiffs in a lawsuit that concerns patent rights and genetically modified organisms (GMO). The issue centers on the legal ramifications that might arise if patented genes are found on farms that don’t use GMOs, cross-pollination that can occur through the drift of seeds or pollen.

The Full Moon Farm farmers are the only Vermont farmers among the 83 plaintiffs, though two Vermont farm advocacy groups — Northeast Organic Farming Association-Vermont and Rural Vermont — are plaintiffs.

“Personally, I joined really because I want to make a difference on this planet, and because I really feel like GMOs are worse than DDT,” Nevitt said. “They’re the worst thing that has happened to our food supply in history, and people have to be made more aware of it. And if I could play some small part in that, I would.”

In all, more than 300,000 people are represented by the 83 plaintiffs, which includes 36 organizations, said their lawyer, Daniel Ravicher. He is executive director of the Public Patent Foundation, a nonprofit based at Benjamin Cardozo School of Law in New York City.

Only the Old Confederacy can save Newt now

The Republican Party has become the party of the rich right wing elite. Racist Nazi, KKK Scumbags Dominionists and worshipers of some perverted for of Anti-Christ. They hate women, LGBT/T people, hippies, intellectuals, science and America.

From Salon:

He was slaughtered in Florida — but not everywhere in Florida

By Steve Kornacki
February 1, 2012

There are plenty of possible explanations that have nothing to do with conventional strategy for why Newt Gingrich is so adamant that he’ll continue his campaign well into the future.

But if you’re looking for a rationale that’s grounded in political logic, just take a look at how the county-by-county vote broke down in Florida, courtesy of this handy map that the Huffington Post put together:

The blue counties were won by Mitt Romney, while Gingrich carried the red ones. Gingrich’s strength, as you can see, was heavily concentrated in the northeast corner of the state and in the panhandle region. Given that he ran 14 points behind Romney statewide, it’s striking that Gingrich actually finished first in so many counties, and his margins in some of them were considerable; all told, he beat Romney by double-digits in 20 counties.

This underscores the profound cultural and demographic that define Florida, and the significance for future contests in other states is obvious. As Ed Kilgore put it, “basically, the more a county resembled GA or AL, the more likely it was that Newt would win, and that, of course, will be part of his rationale for continuing on, at least to states where Crackro-Americans dominate.”

This is why, as much as Romney would like to behave as the presumptive GOP nominee now, Gingrich will still be treated as a relevant figure by the political world at least through early March. That’s when Georgia, Alabama and several other Old Confederacy states that are demographically similar to Gingrich’s Florida sweet spots – and to South Carolina, for that matter — will vote.

Susan G. Komen: Can You Trust a Breast Cancer Organization Whose Staff and Board Members Lie About Breast Cancer?

From RH Reality Check:

by Jodi Jacobson, Editor-in-Chief, RH Reality Check
February 1, 2012

Can you trust a breast cancer organization whose staff and board lie about medical science, including breast cancer?

Today, amidst the outcry surrounding the decision by the Susan G. Komen Foundation to demand that its state affiliates terminate a successful five-year relationship working with Planned Parenthood clinics to increase access to breast cancer screening for low-income and uninsured women, it dawned on me that there is another pressing question here not being asked.

Why has the world’s largest breast cancer advocacy organization hired senior staff people and elected to its board individuals who misrepresent, or are allied with those who misrepresent, medical and public health evidence, including about causes of breast cancer?

It seems to me that the most fundamental measure of accountability for an organization dealing with life-threatening illnesses and public heath problems such as breast cancer is the efficacy with which that organization evaluates, communicates about, and respects medical and scientific evidence. Further from that, it would seem imperative that such an organization hire staff and elect board members who uphold the highest standards of science and medicine without regard to personal ideology.

Yet Komen has done just the opposite. They hired a known anti-choice politician, failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Karen Handel, as their Senior Vice President for Policy, a woman who misrepresented facts about government funding of Planned Parenthood as part of her core campaign strategy, and who also supports the spread of misinformation about public health and individual consequences of abortion care, outright lies that have been soundly refuted by medical and public health experts. The foundation of Handel’s career and poiltical candidacy is an ideology based on misrepresenting scientific, medical, and other facts.  Isn’t that damaging to an organization that claims to be the world’s largest donor to scientific research on breast cancer? Why would an organization concernd about accuracy in research hire such a person?

They also elected Jane Abraham, the General Chairman of the anti-choice Susan B. Anthony List (SBA) to their board. SBA itself is founded on misrepresentation of the history of Susan B. Anthony, and has constantly spread false and misleading information about federal government funding of abortion, about health reform, and about the the public health and medical evidence surrounding safe abortion care.

Susan G. Komen’s Founder Is Major GOP Donor, Ex-Bush Ambassador

From Mother Jones:

By Kate Sheppard
Wed Feb. 1, 2012

Tuesday’s news that Susan G. Komen for the Cure is ending funding it provided to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings has led to increased scrutiny of Komen’s staff, which—as I reported previously—includes a federal lobbyist who pledged to defund Planned Parenthood while campaigning for governor of Georgia.

Komen’s founder is pretty conservative, too. Komen CEO Nancy G. Brinker, who founded the foundation in memory of a sister who died from breast cancer, was the chief protocol officer for the United States from 2007 to 2009 under the George W.
