Science writer Simon Singh wins bitter libel battle

Simon Singh, the science writer, today won his legal case against chiropractors who sued him for libel over his criticism of their medical claims.

The British Chiropractic Association (BCA) this morning dropped its libel claim against Dr Singh, two weeks after a landmark judgment by the Court of Appeal ruled that the author could use the defense of fair comment.

Ely Place Chambers, which acted for Dr Singh, said in a statement:  “The BCA today served a Notice of Discontinuance bringing to an end its ill-fated libel claim against Dr Simon Singh arising out of criticisms he made of its promotion of treatments for childhood ailments.

“Dr Singh’s predicament as the sole defendant in an action brought in respect of a comment piece in The Guardian newspaper (to which the BCA never directed any complaint) was seen as a rallying point for those concerned about the abuse of UK libel laws in connection with scientific debate.

“Interest intensified when Eady J ruled that his words were not comment and that in order to defend himself he would have to prove the objective truth of what he wrote. Earlier this month the Court of Appeal overturned that ruling and this has lead the BCA to abandon its claim.”

Dr Singh was sued for libel over a newspaper article in which he accused the BCA of “happily promoting bogus treatments”, such as the use of chiropractic for childhood asthma and infant colic.

Dr Singh told The Times today: “It’s a huge relief to suddenly have this whole thing disappear. I’m still getting my head around it. I’ve got stacks of paperwork here in my office, relating to chiropractic and legal documents, and I don’t have to look at it as of today. I don’t know whether I’ll stick it in the attic or burn it.”

He said he would be pursuing the BCA for his legal costs. “The issue of costs is still outstanding. I suppose it will cost the BCA upward of £300,000, and I want to make sure they end up paying my legal costs, which will be over £100,000. It could be that I don’t get that money back: that explains why people don’t fight libel cases.”

He said that he will continue to campaign for libel reform, and pointed out that Peter Wilmshurst, a cardiologist, is still being sued for libel for criticisms he made of an American company’s medical device.

“The Court of Appeal judgment says that when a science journalist is sued for libel for criticizing evidence, the defence of fair comment should be the default position. But that doesn’t stop libel tourism, or huge companies suing individual scientists, journalists or bloggers to silence them, or change the burden of proof, or reduce the huge costs that are involved.

“The great thing is that yesterday the third of the three major political parties published its manifesto, and all three are committed to a libel reform bill. We need one.”

Hope and Hurt for Trans Americans in the APA’s Proposed DSM Revisions

On Monday, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force praised the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) favoring of “gender incongruence” and refutation of “gender identity disorder” (GID) as part of its suggested revisions to the upcoming 5th edition of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM), a text that is used by clinicians and psychiatrists to diagnose psychiatric illnesses. However, the Task Force notes that there is much work to be done on the problematic diagnostic criteria that still mislabels many trans and gender variant people as having a mental disorder.

>From the press release< http://www.thetaskforce.org/press/releases/pr_041210 >:

WASHINGTON, April 12 — The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force today affirmed the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) refutation of “gender identity disorder” in favor of “gender incongruence,” but calls for the removal of “transvestic disorder” and expresses concerns about other proposed revisions to the upcoming 5th edition of the APA’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM).

“We see this revision as an evolutionary step toward removal of all diagnoses related to gender nonconformity in the DSM,” said Jaime Grant, director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s Policy Institute. “Gender variance is not a psychiatric problem; it’s a natural human variation that in some cases requires medical attention and support.”

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force released this statement as part of its commentary (linked below) on the latest proposed revisions to the APA’s Diagnostic Statistical Manual.

In their feedback, the Task Force praises the aforementioned shift as being more reflective of current understanding of trans identity and as a move towards “affirming a natural variance in human gender identity”.

However, the Task Force notes that there is still work to be done. Specifically, the Task Force calls for the removal of the defamatory classification of “transvestic disorder” – used to replace “transvestic fetishism” < http://www.minddisorders.com/Py-Z/Transvestic-fetishism.html > but given the same diagnostic criteria – which singles out transwomen (those that identify female but were birth-assigned male) as essentially being sexually deviant.

It notes that the “very notion that cross-dressing among female-born individuals is never pathological, while cross-dressing among male-born clients has multiple pathological manifestations reeks of a kind of sexism we find astonishing for psychiatry in the 21st century. It is well past time for the removal of disorders associated with disfavored versions of femininity, which call to mind the infamous 19th century diagnosis of ‘hysteria’ in women.”

As such, the Task Force calls for the removal of “transvestic disorder” and its controversial and heavily challenged specifier “autogynophelia http://www.tsroadmap.com/info/autogynephilia.html.”

The Task Force makes it clear that while the move toward “distress-based” diagnosis in DSM-V should be applauded, strong concerns remain that the guidelines are still vague and that they fundamentally fail to recognize the difference between what is termed “minority stress” – that is to say, the emotional distress that LGBTs face as a marginalized group that is subject to discrimination – and that of stress brought about by “specific gender expression.” The Task Force reiterates a need to make it clear that distress as a result of societal discrimination should not be used as evidence of a mental disorder.

Why are Changes to the DSM Needed?

The blanket categorization of gender variant and trans identity as a disorder creates unnecessary and harmful barriers to surgical and hormonal transition treatments that also reinforces the social stigma that persists surrounding trans issues. The perpetuation of this stigma and the discrimination that many trans patients face in health care is something that the Task Force references in its comments on the proposed DSM-V changes:

Data from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force/National Center for Transgender Equality’s National Transgender Discrimination Survey compiles questionnaires from 6,500 transgender and gender nonconforming people across the United States. Fifty percent (50%) of our respondents report being forced to educate their medical providers to ensure they received adequate and sensitive care. Nearly half of our sample reports postponing some form of medical care because of the pervasive discrimination they faced at the hands of insensitive or bigoted healthcare providers. Thus, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force advocates for the full declassification of Gender Incongruence, alongside improvements within the International Classification of Diseases and U.S. health care systems to ensure adequate access for all transgender people seeking medical support to fully embody their gender identity.

The label of mental disorder is also particularly harmful to transitioned individuals who may be happy and functional in every respect following their gender reassignment but are still maligned by the current diagnostic criteria which labels them as having a disorder. This can impact many areas of a trans person’s life, but in particular can be damaging to their career and employment opportunities.

Though seeking to remedy this, the proposed changes to DSM-V, with its good intentioned move from GID to “gender incongruence,” could perpetuate this problem due to ambiguous criterion that also might potentially widen diagnosis to include people that do not even fit the standard definition of gender disphoria< http://www.gidreform.org/wpath2009/ >. You can learn more about this by going here < http://gidreform.wordpress.com/2010/02/10/dsm-v-task-force-releases-proposed-diagnostic-criteria/ > to read a concise but thorough analysis of the proposed changes as written by Kelley Winters of GID Reform Advocates.

Overall, the proposed revisions show progress toward recognizing transgender and gender variant identity while removing the label of “disorder” and the stigma that comes with it.

That said, these changes add up to only perfunctory alterations that, for LGBT rights advocates, dance around the heart of the issue – namely that gender identity variance is not a pathology. As such, reform advocates will continue to work strongly to push for less ambiguous, less gender binary < http://www.videojug.com/expertanswer/transgender-what-does-it-mean/what-is-the-gender-binary-system > criteria in the DSM to prevent gender variant persons from being unfairly categorized as having a psychiatric problem when no subjective distress or impaired function is evidenced, and for medical assistance to be refocused from a gatekeeper approach to one of facilitating patient care and support that is outcome orientated.

The release of DSM-V is now scheduled for May, 2013.

ENDA Should Not Be The Goal!

ENDA should not be the goal but rather the starting point for LGBT/T workers rights.

All too often when I read about ENDA the stories are about people who are already so far up the socio-economic chain as to make their struggles with employment sound like fables.

Focusing on the Susan Stantons of the world makes for good news.  I’m sure she is a decent person and all that and I am equally certain that her losing her job was a vile act of discrimination.

But is the struggle for employment non-discrimination really all about those in the middle and upper classes?

What about those of us who work in restaurants and big box stores?  Or those even more lumpen who have to do sex work because even restaurants and big boxes won’t hire them?

Lets focus for a moment on those workers in what has been labeled by the privileged elite as the “New Service Economy”. There is a reality that was laid out in Barbara Ehrenreich’s  book Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America that life sucks for those workers making less than 15 to 20 thousand dollars a year.  One is often unable to keep a roof over one’s head, eat, afford transportation to and from work and the clothes required to work.

Never mind the thought of getting SRS or any of the other procedures commonly required by those in transition including but not exclusive to: Mandated professional psychiatric care.  Electrolysis and hormones.

The great bulk of the medically uninsured are in this category.  But even for those insured medical costs related to transsexualism and transgenderism are often specifically excluded.  Sometimes using the pre-existing condition clause if the policy lacks a specific exclusion.

There is another proposition slowly making its way through the process.  One I hear almost no mention of in the LGBT/T press or activist circles but hear plenty about in the left wing circles that are a major influence on me.

Something called the Employee Free Choice Act that would help end the corporate strangle hold of workers attempting to unionize and organize to promote the rights and interests of the workers.  Too often we have no redress, no one to represent us and argue that our working conditions are un-fair or even dangerous.  Not to mention humiliating, stressful and degrading.

Working conditions suck in the US.  American workers work longer hours with less job security or benefits that do the workers in almost every other industrialized nation.

Oh I forgot we live in a post-industrialized society where the rich become ever richer by moving their money around, creating nothing except an endless cycle of bubbles and recessions, while the rest of us have become the new servant class.  As a member of that servant class I am required to smile and lie to sell others cheap poorly made product, food that is often a nutritional nightmare.  All the while knowing the reality of what I am doing and smiling as well as shuffling in a properly subservient manner.

There is a dirty secret that misses the news for all its coverage of the Tea Bagger, neo-Nazi racist pigs.  There is an equally angry left wing under class of overly educated peons who have read Marx, Kropotkin and Bukharin.

ENDA isn’t the end of the struggle for LGBT/T workers rights.  It is the starting point

The Return of Christian Terrorism

Threats of right-wing violence have doubled in the past year. What is behind the latest upsurge in the movement to create a Christian theocratic state?

By Mark Jurgensmeyer

April 15, 2010

When Scott Roeder, the murderer of Wichita Kansas abortion clinic provider Dr. George Tiller, had his day in court, he spent much of his rambling self-defense quoting the words of another abortion clinic assassin, Reverend Paul Hill. In the 1990s my own research had brought me into conversation with others in the inner circle in which Hill and Roeder were at that time involved. So it was a chilling experience for me to realize that this awful mood of American Christian terrorism—culminating in the catastrophic attack on the Oklahoma City Federal Building—has now returned.

Many of the same people who readily see how horribly oppressive the Islamo-fascist states are to women as well as LGBT/T folks have a blind eye when it comes to the West’s own homegrown theocratic oppressors.   Yet Christianity has as bad a record as Islam does when it comes to committing genocide against people who do not believe the same sky daddy fantasies as they do.

The biggest problem with monotheism is it has too many gods.

No gods, No masters.

Pope’s No. 2: Pedophilia linked to homosexuality

SANTIAGO, Chile — The Vatican’s second-highest authority says the sex scandals haunting the Roman Catholic Church are linked to homosexuality and not celibacy among priests.

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican’s secretary of state, made the comments during a news conference Monday in Chile, where one of the church’s highest-profile pedophile cases involves a priest having sex with young girls.

“Many psychologists and psychiatrists have demonstrated that there is no relation between celibacy and pedophilia. But many others have demonstrated, I have been told recently, that there is a relation between homosexuality and pedophilia. That is true,” said Bertone. “That is the problem.”

His comments drew angry reactions from Chile’s gay rights advocates.

“Neither Bertone nor the Vatican has the moral authority to give lessons on sexuality,” said Rolando Jimenez, president of the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation in Chile.

Bishop ‘blames Jews’ for criticism of Catholic church record on abuse

From The Guardian UK

Tom Kington, Rome

guardian.co.uk, Sunday 11 April 2010 21.37 BST

A furious transatlantic row has erupted over quotes that were attributed to a retired Italian bishop, which suggested that Jews were behind the current criticism of the Catholic church’s record on tackling clerical sex abuse.

A website quoted Giacomo Babini, the emeritus bishop of Grosseto, as saying he believed a “Zionist attack” was behind the criticism, considering how “powerful and refined” the criticism is.

The comments, which have been denied by the bishop, follow a series of statements from Catholic churchmen alleging the existence of plots to weaken the church and Pope Benedict XVI.

Guest Post: The silent casualties of discrimination, and how you can save a life

Reposted with permission

A letter Mila and Professor Jayna Ponder of Trans-Ponder regarding trans people, broader community, and the issue of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

Pay attention, this affects you. You are involved in this and might not even know it!

When you hear the word discrimination, the taste it leaves is bitter and ugly. It is a tactile word that brings visions of ostracism, alienation, or even outright segregation. It is a weapon that is used to silently assault people like us. We are able and willing American workers that are often ejected from the workplace. Mortally wounding our ability to support ourselves and our families, simply for telling the truth about our existence. We who face discrimination include doctors, lawyers, technicians, scientists, professors, and any other skilled profession you can think of. We are relegated to a class of people that is for all intent and purpose banned from having substantial employment, and relegated to a life of poverty. We are denied medical care, even in life threatening situations. We are upstanding Americans suffering every day because of the complicit actions and inactions of government, businesses, and average citizens. Perhaps even you.

It is not enough to reduce nearly half of entire class of people to poverty by failing to grant them legal protection in jobs, but we are routinely mocked, ridiculed, stereotyped and mischaracterized by everyone, from scare mongering political and religious demagogues, to late night talk shows (Conan, Letterman, we’re looking at you in the eyes). This is continued to be perpetuated by indie film makers and festivals and certain LGBT blogs that will use our name as an insult (i.e. Dan Savage). Even the mainstream media aggressively misrepresents the issues of our murders through the tactics of mis-gendering, publicly violating our sensitive medical privacy, dredging up irrelevant personal details, and treating the news of our murders differently than any other. The result of which is used to justify our erasure and to reduce the stories of our death to entertainment shock value.

We are a class of people that tend to attain higher levels of education and yet are run out of even basic jobs that could be filled by high school drop outs. In a country that values hard work, self determination, and success we are denied any of these. Despite our abilities, our intelligence, and our desire for a better life, we are instead in a position where less than half of our community in California are even able to work full time and in fact more than a quarter will not even make $10,000 a year. Those lucky ones that do get stable work will likely be subject to harassment. They’ll put on a brave face to earn the necessities of basic survival and endure denigrating remarks by callous co-workers. They know that if they lose their job, they might not be able to find other employment. They know that because the world sanctions their dismissal and permits business to categorically deny them work, that loss of their job could sentence them to a life of poverty, starvation, and homelessness. Even those homeless are denied access to shelter, because of who they are.

So we are forced to hide and be-ashamed the very impertinence of wanting to live healthy and productive lives makes others uncomfortable. We are pushed away from public view because we are treated as lepers when we show ourselves, unless we are placed as a spectacle for the laughs and jeers of a public that delights in an underclass. A public that feels more comfortable when they can express their disdain for us with their friends at home, secretly passing word that they would never work with “one of those people,” forgetting that “one of those people” is a doctor, scientist, computer programmer, teacher, artist, or any other skilled professional that you can think of. They forget that “one of those people,” is a person, with feelings and needs and goals. They forget that the inventions that they use, they technology they depend on, the games that they play, the books that they have read, were influenced, and even made because of contributions from “one of those people.”

They forget that American Citizens have a promises of “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”.

Complicity is doing nothing when our lives are taken through violence, denial of the ability to earn a livelihood, and the trauma to being relegated to life on the streets. How can they stand by as liberty is taken away with public humiliation, fear mongering, and lies, and how can anyone justify these oppressive tactics that strip law abiding American Citizens of the basic tools that are needed to pursue happiness.

Even our education becomes a struggle, as our youth are thrown out of schools “for who we are”, or have to walk past parent protests to enter the classroom. We are shamed, bullied, and outcast by students and teachers alike, until we fade away and disappear. How convenient it is when we just “go away”, even if going away means suicide or living in the gutter. We end up doing both in astounding numbers.

Our fate is often left in the hands of organizations without any representation from the people who are directly affected by the policies and laws that they enact, or fail to enact. These are organizations that declare to speak for us when they address that we exist at all and often lack in even the basic institutional competencies to do so.

We are judged not by who we are as people, or even ‘the content of our character’ but on vague assumptions and blatant ignorance, perpetuated by people who believe that their desire to be comfortable around people “more like themselves” should trump the rights of fellow law abiding Americans citizens to go to work, to live, and to survive.

We are citizens who want only to join the workplace with dignity, so that we can provide for our families. We wish only to share in the same rights that all Americans were promised, regardless of our orientation or gender identity.

Now is your chance to be good neighbors, and stop the silence. Now is your chance to help your fellow law abiding American Citizens be productive members of society. Now is your chance to say to the world “Discrimination is wrong, and I will not stand idly by! I will call my senator and tell them that I think that all people should be treated equally in the workplace, and we support an inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act.”

This is your chance to do the right thing.

Sincerely

Worlds Without Women

From the New York Times
April 11, 2010
By MAUREEN DOWD

WASHINGTON

When I was in Saudi Arabia, I had tea and sweets with a group of educated and sophisticated young professional women.

I asked why they were not more upset about living in a country where women’s rights were strangled, an inbred and autocratic state more like an archaic men’s club than a modern nation. They told me, somewhat defensively, that the kingdom was moving at its own pace, glacial as that seemed to outsiders.

How could such spirited women, smart and successful on every other level, acquiesce in their own subordination?

I was puzzling over that one when it hit me: As a Catholic woman, I was doing the same thing.

I, too, belonged to an inbred and wealthy men’s club cloistered behind walls and disdaining modernity.

I, too, remained part of an autocratic society that repressed women and ignored their progress in the secular world.

I, too, rationalized as men in dresses allowed our religious kingdom to decay and to cling to outdated misogynistic rituals, blind to the benefits of welcoming women’s brains, talents and hearts into their ancient fraternity.

AP EXCLUSIVE: Letter shows future Pope Benedict XVI resisted defrocking molester priest

The future Pope Benedict XVI resisted pleas to defrock a California priest with a record of sexually molesting children, citing concerns including “the good of the universal church,” according to a 1985 letter bearing his signature.

The correspondence, obtained by The Associated Press, is the strongest challenge yet to the Vatican’s insistence that Benedict played no role in blocking the removal of pedophile priests during his years as head of the Catholic Church’s doctrinal watchdog office.

CLPP 2010: Feminism and the rights of people involved in sex work and street economies

From Feministing:

http://www.feministing.com/archives/020708.html

This panel was an incredible conversation about the issues surrounding sex work and street economies. What was so great about it was that it featured and centered the experiences of folks who are sex workers themselves or work directly with sex workers.

So often conversations and debates about sex work simply leave the workers themselves out completely.

These notes are not a comprehensive view of the discussion, but some notes after the jump. Check out the organizations that were present for some really great work that is trying to address the needs of folks in the sex work industry directly.

Cyndi Lauper to open homeless shelter for LGBT youth

Cyndi Lauper is proving girls do more than just “wanna have fun.” They also fight for causes close to their heart.

Lauper, according to DNAinfo, plans to open a homeless shelter in Harlem in New York City  for lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual youth.

“Kids are coming out in greater numbers as they see themselves accepted and represented on TV and in movies, but they’re still being kicked out of their homes or running away and living on the streets,” Lauper said in a statement.

Lauper – who is working on the project with her publicist, Lisa Barbaris, and Colleen Jackson, West End Inter generational Residence executive directors – plans to raise money for the project through her True Colors Fund.

There are roughly 3,000 to 8,000 homeless LGBT kids in New York City according to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

Here’s The Real Enemy

One of the things that has come to bother me a good deal is that progressives expend far more energy in attacking each other than they do attacking the real enemy.

Traditional Values Coalition is a Christo-Nazi Organization, a Hate Group whose main purpose is the oppression of women as well as LGBT/T people. Other places have other orgaizations.

The following is one of their letters they send out to scam their army of bigots to get them to finance their hate campaigns.

ENDA Would Normalize The Dirty 30

April 8, 2010

Dear Traditional Values Coalition Supporter

Donate Now!

In the next few weeks, President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and their homosexual and transgender allies will attempt to ram through the so-called Employment Non-Discrimination Act

What you may not know is that ENDA normalizes and provides special federal protection for 30+ bizarre sexual orientations listed by the American Psychiatric Association – the so-called “Dirty 30.” These 30+ fetishes include behaviors that are felonies or misdemeanors in most states.

ENDA’s “Dirty 30” includes such bizarre criminal acts as incest, pedophilia, prostitution, beastiality, and cross-dressing. If we don’t act today, Obama and Pelosi will normalize these disorders by federal law on April 21!

In a moment of candor, liberal Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) openly admitted on the House floor that the “Dirty 30” would be covered by federal law. In fact, he wants the Dirty 30 to be given special protection! In his own words: “all of these philias and fetishes and isms that were put forward–need not live in fear because of who they are.”

If Obama, Pelosi, Hastings and the Congressional Democrats pass ENDA, co-workers will be forced to work alongside individuals with these bizarre sex fetishes. Christian businesses will be directly impacted by ENDA. They would be forced to hire or retain cross-dressers and individuals who engage in these sinful behaviors. Students will be indoctrinated that “alternative lifestyles” are no different than traditional lifestyles. Young children will be forced to learn about these bizarre sexual fetishes – and you will have no say in the matter.

TVC has led the fight against ENDA for more than a decade. We have lobbied Members of Congress and their staff and provided a wealth of information on why ENDA should not be passed.

Will you help TVC continue this fight?

ENDA will be voted on in the House Education and Labor Committee on April 21 and sent to the floor for a vote by the end of April. It must be defeated. Contact your Members of Congress.

Sincerely,

Rev. Louis Sheldon and Andrea Lafferty

P.S. Please visit ENDAHurtskids.com
to sign our petition against ENDA. It’s critical that you contact
your Members of Congress today, and tell them to vote NO on this
outrageous legislation. We’re counting on your immediate help.

These Christo-Nazis use every single vile lie they can muster.

What bothers me is that we often hurl the same insults at each other.

Identity politics of the sort that require us to define others in the same basic place we are as the enemy and engage in horizontal hate slinging are not only self defeating but in the long run insure the victory of these fucks.

Moderation and Keeping It Civil

There are some people who comment on this blog who are on permanent moderation and whose chance of ever having anything appear here are somewhere between slim and zero.

I have other people on moderation but let almost everything they write through, although I do work and sometimes things have to wait.

There is one sock puppet, who I occasionally let post something.  Even though I think this person is a total fraud with an extremely bad history as far as TS/TG people go.

Posts passing through immediately are based on recognition of both your e-mail address and your ISP address.  Some assign different ISP addresses every time one accesses the web.  Also if you use wi-fi hot spots even if you are not moderated your post will be held in moderation queue.  This is due to it having been sent through an unrecognized ISP issuer.

There are a number of folks here commenting with strong opinions.  I do not want this blog turning into some place like alt.support.SRS on the Usenet.  Keep it civil.  Though we all are human and get angry at opinions that sound like someone pulled them from their arse it is important to remember who our real enemies are and remember that horizontal hostility is a waste of time and energy as well as converting no one to your position.

Friday Night Fun and Culture

This week a bit of a two for the price of one.  As you know I have a love of semi-obscure women folk singers, often lesbian.  Some 15 years ago I found a Catie Curtis CD with a hole punched through the jewel box in a remainder bin.  She looked so cute and like the sort of artist I’d like so I took a chance.

The other part of the two-fer is that she is performing at a coffeehouse in Berkeley that was my favorite haunt some 40 years ago, Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse.  Gerde’s Folk City may have been swallowed by NYU and the Gaslight may exist only in the memory of those of us who spent time in the Village during the 1960s but Freight and Salvage just keeps on chugging along.

This is an all too common story regarding the on going treatment of transsexual and transgender people, many people of color and almost all poor that too often gets ignored by the educated and privileged TS/TG people who do have an ounce of power and a voice.

Former Memphis cop testifies to beating of prisoner by arresting officer

By Lawrence Buser

Friday, April 9, 2010

A former Memphis police officer told a federal jury Thursday that a fellow officer’s videotaped altercation with a transgender prisoner last year was not a fight but “a beatdown” by the officer.

Testifying for the prosecution, James Swain said he watched officer Bridges “Sutton” McRae use his metal handcuffs like brass knuckles to punch the prisoner several times in the head in the sally port of the jail.

McRae, who was fired, is charged with civil rights violations. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a maximum $250,000 fine.

Swain said the incident began when the prisoner, Dwayne Johnson, refused to be fingerprinted unless McRae called him by his feminine name, Duanna.

Christo-Nazi Fred Phelps and His Spawn Plan On Picketing the Funerals of the Miners Killed this Week

You just have to know you are the absolute scum of the earth when you are so totally vile even the freaking Klu Klux Klan denounces you as bigoted scum. Which BTW according to recent news stories they actually did.

When that old fuck, Fred Phelps dies I’d love to see millions of people picket his funeral with hateful signs saying how he burns in hell.

It won’t happen because he is the vilest person in the world.

Protesters From Kansas Take Aim at Miners

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/09/us/09westboro.html?partner=rss&emc=rss

By BERNIE BECKER

MONTCOAL W.V. — Protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., headed to the Upper Big Branch mine Thursday morning to convey the message that the explosion there that left 25 miners dead was a result of e-mail messages allegedly sent from West Virginia threatening the Church and its publisher, according to a statement from the Church.

The church, which is led by Fred Phelps, has attracted attention in recent years by showing up at funerals for soldiers who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. At those funerals they carry signs that say that God hates homosexuality and that the death of soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan is God’s way of punishing the United States for its tolerance of it.

“This whole nation is awash in rebellious sin and defiance of God, His standard, and His servant’s faithful words,” a news release on the church’s Web site said Thursday morning.

The statement said the church had received threats about a trip to West Virginia and Virginia scheduled to begin Thursday.

“So God reached down and smacked one of those mines, killing 25 (and likely four more are dead),” it said. “Now you moan and wallow in self-pity, and pour over the details of the dead rebels’ lives, pretending they’re heroes.”

According to its Web site, the church is scheduled to protest at several locations in Virginia and West Virginia, Thursday through Sunday, including at the West Virginia state capitol and the Hillel on the Virginia Tech campus.

Last month the Supreme Court agreed to decide whether the father of a Marine killed in Iraq may sue protesters from the church who picketed his son’s funeral with signs that read “God Hates You” and “Thank God for Dead Soldiers.”

School bullying is killing our children

One year ago, I was an ordinary working mom, looking after my family and doing the best I could as a parent. But on April 6, 2009, my life changed forever.

While I was cooking dinner for my four children, my son Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover excused himself and went to his room. When I checked on him, I imagined he would be doing his homework or playing video games. Instead, he was hanging from an extension cord tied around his neck. He was only 11 years old.

Carl liked football and basketball and playing video games with his little brother. He loved the Lord and he loved his family. What could drive a child to take his own life?

That question haunts me to this day. I will probably never know the answer, but what we do know is that Carl was being bullied relentlessly at school. He didn’t want to tell me what was bothering him, but I kept at him, and he finally told me that kids at school were pushing him around, calling him names, saying he acted “gay,” and calling him “faggot.”

While my heart instantly broke for him, I was furious that he was being subjected to this treatment. Immediately, I called the school and I expected they would be just as upset as I was. But instead, they told me that it was just ordinary social interaction that would work itself out.

I desperately wish they had been right.

If You Think the Civil War Ever Ended, Think Again

Some people have taken me to task because I am an unabashedly left wing anarcha-feminist and atheist who looks at the oppression of people with transsexualism and people with transgenderism in a context that goes beyond just transphobia in its various disguises and place us into the context of being a legitimate minority class of peoples.

Thus when I hear the right wing Christo-fascists spew misogyny that would deny women the right to control their own reproductive choices I see it as part of the same ideology that condemns LGBT/T people by denying them basic civil rights and full equality.

These same people tend to be racist as well as imperialistic supporters of the tyranny of the multi-national corporations and their destruction of workers rights.

In the US this movement is fascist and takes the form of embracing neo-Confederate family values.

When I first moved to Washington, D.C., I had hardly a stick of furniture, so I boarded a bus to take me to the nearest Ikea, which was in a Virginia mall. Quite unfamiliar with the territory, I watched out the window with curiosity as the bus traveled along the chain-store lined route.

Soon I noticed we were traveling along a road called the Jefferson Davis Highway. I was stunned, and a bit sick to my stomach. How could it be that a highway was named after a man who made war against the United States, all so the citizens of his region could continue to hold human beings in chains? All so slave masters could continue to rape the women they claimed to own. The children of these unions were usually enslaved by their own fathers, often acting as servants to their white half-brothers and -sisters.

Professionals Concerned about Gender Diagnoses –Speak up before April 20th

Oh, By The Way I Put This Up So People Would Have Links to go to In Order To Voice Their Opinions Regrading the Oppressive Nature of the DSM and the Psych Establishment.

Time Sensitive — Feedback ends on April 20th

If you are receiving this in error, or are not interested in this topic, please delete. I am sending this out as an email blast to my entire email list (the only time I have ever done this), because it is an extremely timely issue, and I am hoping it will reach as many people as possible.

As many of you know, the American Psychological Association is in the process of revising the psychiatric manual called the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM).  The DSM is one of the most important psychological tools in the world, and impacts not only mental health and medical issues, but is also used in legal decisions. It is an internationally utilized document, and will affect health care and insurance for the next decade.

The APA is accepting feedback on their current suggestions to revise diagnoses. This included Autism, changes to Juvenile Bipolar Disorder, and many other diagnoses. I have long been involved in the reform of the Gender Identity Disorders in the DSM. I have been working with a group of colleagues to craft a statement for the American Psychiatric Association about the proposed diagnoses in the DSM-5. I offer you this link to our web page which outlines our position, and also offers links to petitions that are being circulated.

Here is the link to the APA’s page on suggested revised diagnoses: http://www.dsm5.org/ProposedRevisions/Pages/Default.aspx
You can scroll down to see the Gender related diagnoses, under Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders.
You must sign in to send in your comments.

Our group, Professionals Concerned with Gender Diagnoses in the DSM, has developed suggestions for the APA subcommittee addressing gender diagnoses. Our suggestions are listed here: http://www.professionals.gidreform.org/

Our group was formed for the explicit purpose of offering constructive recommendations to the DSM-5 Task Force and its relevant work groups. What we offer to you here is derived from many hours of discussion and review of the existing literature to reach consensus and to offer scientifically sound recommendations.

We are addressing a number of areas of recommendations including: suggestions for further reform of the GID/GI diagnosis, specific suggestions for a separate adolescent diagnosis, and reform of the child diagnosis. Additionally, we suggest the removal of Transvestic Disorder from the DSM, and also recommend eliminating the need to specifically mention intersex people in the diagnostic criteria.

The time for making suggestions ends on April 20th. This is your opportunity to impact the mental health treatment for transgender, transsexual, and gender nonconforming adults, youth and children well into the 21st century.

Please forward widely.

Ari
