I think socialization is a life-long process that goes far beyond indoctrination.

Heternormativity is the process that erases the presence of L/G people from the books/film/television elements of learning via contact with.

It is the indoctrination aspect that gets over ridden by people born different.

I sort of view transition as becoming part of a culture one has studied from childhood and is finally becoming a member of. There is much that one has learned second hand and after entering the process one starts learning through personal experience.

What I learned as a transkid:

1. What I needed to do to avoid getting beat up.

2. How to pretend to be male (how to act -- see 1 above).

3, How not to let on how smart I was (see 1 & 2 above).

Who I preferred as a sexual partner came naturally from within without intellectualizing it. Later, once I transitioned and could only be myself, I found the menu had a much wider selection but still did not include gay guys.

I really don't think that is true. I think we socialize as transkids. Learning from the cultural soup but missing out on the sort of indoctrination that I see between parents and children at the store where I work.

Perhaps it has been the emergence of gay and lesbian or even of transsexual and transgender but there has been a definite backlash against the "free to be" non-sexist child rearing of the 1970s.

Gender panic has obvious heteronormative indoctrination hitting kids as young as toddlers.

I think we are not indoctrinated to love men or to be sexually attracted to them. Add to that Tina's observation about men being the authors of so much of our pain.

Girls/women are open to giving love and affection to both sexes even if girls and women are valued less so there is a natural affection towards both. Political lesbianism or bisexuality?

A lot of this makes more sense than the perversifying of the large percentage of WBTs who are lesbian or bisexual.

Hi Suzy

As usual you have written an excellent piece.

I agree with almost every aspect of it. However, I think this line it not fully correct: "In part feminists are right and WBTs do miss out on that socialization from the cradle and as a result we are less indoctrinated towards compulsory heterosexuality."

In my view many people with transsexualism actually partly socialize as women from the the craddle; taking care of their kins; an alcoholic mother, etc.

Actually, I would say that most men socialize as men and most women as women; but some men socialize (partly) as women and some women (partly) as men.

hugs

Male authority represses female sexuality, then claims an unrealistically low incidence of lesbianism.

Perhaps there are fewer of us post-ops in the closet. Most are heterosexual, after all, but the statistically stronger minority that comes out as lesbian may be closer to reality.

Consider what would happen if natal women were freer to live their orientation.

There may not be, in reality, such a big difference among females of different history after all.
